I've had a long run in with time, and continue to run into it.
John Hewitt is an alias. John Hewitt is a frame of mind. John Hewitt is a truth and among those truths lie the songs. The most important things are the songs. They live and breathe on their own and as a result they emit their own abundance of air. It's beyond me where they come from, or where they're going. I feel bad for the songs. We want them to be heard as much as they can only be sung. But the waiting ears are not ours to choose.
John Hewitt began working a few jobs out east. Living near the three of the greatest great lakes and performing as much as possible. Starting out in cover bands packed with aging men still willing to gig their overworked hearts out, he took in all the old tricks, all the ins and outs of being in a band and the importance and place of every instrument. Pumping gas and playing the local clubs of his hometown. Running on caffeine, beer and the enjoyment of going to the school of yesterdays records.
The time came to move to the big smoke. To say the least, this man who is a fan of The United States and Canada, has little good to say about his five year stint in Toronto. There are good people everywhere. Sometimes good people are in the wrong place. Continuing to perform, travel, tour, write and record it became clear that a change was needed. After meeting and performing with many talented musicians and artists it was time to hit the road once again.
After some time off to readjust John is back working on his song writing which he holds as his most important musical focus. However soon he will be back in the cafes, coffee shops, and stages to broadcast his newest compositions and show to the world what he has to offer as a writer, and as a performer.
When the God's above decide where you land your feet next they never plan on how far you have to fall, just so you get your feet on the ground. Toronto to Edmonton was five years in the making and without a shadow of a doubt an easier transition than small town Ontario to Big City Smog. After recording and releasing five albums under a different name, John Hewitt is ready to go back to his roots and release what has always been bubbling in at the surface. Sometimes you're born in the wrong time, the wrong place. Sometimes you change everything around you and become ready to walk back into 1963. Or whatever you relate to. Either way rent needs to be paid and songs need to be sung.
